My name is Xianwei Wu. I was born in a small village of Hebei, P. R. China. My father and my mother are farmers. They did not receive much education, but they are very gentle and hardworking. They taught me the axiom "No pain, No gain". From them I learned how to deal with difficulties and how to make friends.
In 1990, I entered Jilin University of Technology (JUT), with the highest score in the high school at the National College Entrance Examination. As an undergraduate student, I obtained a lot of awards in the contests of Advanced Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Circuit Design. My research field is signal processing and system design for industrial applications. My thesis is on "Extended PCB Design for IBM PC for the Principle of Microprocessors". In this project, I designed our own experiment system for the Micro-controllers Lab in Jilin University of Technology. This experiment system was successfully designed and later was used in the student education. Due to this achievement, I obtained the "Excellent Undergraduate of 1994" of the University. I obtained my B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering in 1994 and ranked the fourth in the class of 182 students.
Then, I was admitted to pursue a M.S. degree in the Graduate School of JUT without the Entrance Test. In March 1997, I obtained my M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and ranked the third in the class of 42 students.
My major is Image Processing. During this period I engaged in these projects below:
(1) Design of Display Screen for the Foreign Exchange. I extended the high speed serial port of PC to accomplish the data acquisition and communication to meet the critical real-time requirements. This project gave the bank a good reputation of rapid and convenient service. (2) Image Compression based on the Fractal Theory. Based on typical Fractal Theory, I added new thoughts to it by "applying the domain blocks with changeable length to match the range blocks to accomplish the nonlinear match". The "Lena" image (256X256) can be compressed at a compression rate of 15.2 and the PSNR was 28.92 dB. In practice I did not search all domain blocks in the image, but only use the neighbor domain blocks. So the time was nearly half of typical method. I finished it in half a year. (3) Digital Image Compression based on the Nonlinear VQ. Based on the VQ theory, I proposed a new method for the static image. The main purpose of this method is to compress the images of vehicle when they are passing through highway road. The good display results can be obtained when it is asked to display the library of passed vehicles. (4) Identification System of Moving Vehicle. I designed the hardware and software of the system. For the image compression of the standard vehicle, I applied nonlinear VQ technique method mentioned above. The system has been working very well for 2 years on the Changchun-Siping Highway. This system already became industrial products, and I obtained the honors from Science and Technology Committee of Jilin Province. Through this project, I learned how to change an idea into a real product and I learned how to do when I am in trouble. (5) Identification System of Vehicle passing through the Boundary Line of P. R. China in the Huanggang Port of Shenzhen City.
In March 1997, after obtained my M.S. degree with excellent record, I was admitted as a Ph.D. student. My major is Mechanical Engineering, and my research topic is on Development of Ultrasonic Motor Control System. This project mainly focuses on how to obtain the signal from the noise with 10-100 times amplitude higher, how to use the signal with such a low amplitude to control the ultra-motor precisely, and use the H-infinite algorithm to control the system effectively.
During this 5 years, I got 3 certificates for my hard work in projects, and I also got a lot of knowledge about computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. I hope I can have a chance to mature them in the future.
